March 14 – International Day of Rivers.
March 14 is celebrated in many countries
as the International Day of Rivers. It is also
known worldwide as the "International Day of Action Against Dams," which
appeared on the calendar of environmental dates at the initiative of the American
public organization "International Rivers Network."
The date was established in March 1997 in the Brazilian city of Curitiba, where the First International Conference Against the Construction of Large Dams was held. It supported the establishment of a new holiday and resolved to "celebrate the day of struggle against dams in defense of Rivers, Water, and Life annually on March 14." The motto of the Day became the words: "For rivers, water, and life!"
There are 13 rivers flowing through the territory of the Beshenkovichi District. Of these, 1 is a large river – the Western Dvina, with a length of 1020 km, of which 88 km run through the territory of our district. It is one of the most significant rivers in Belarus, second only to the Dnieper in terms of water flow. It originates from Lake Koryakino, 14 kilometers southwest of the urban-type settlement of Peno in the Tver Region (Russia), and flows into the Gulf of Riga of the Baltic Sea near the city of Riga (Latvia). It flows through the Tver and Smolensk regions of Russia, Belarus, and Latvia.
The total length of the rivers flowing through the territory of the Beshenkovichi District is 297.2 km.
There are also 10 significant streams flowing through the district, with lengths ranging from 1.2 to 4.5 km, with a total lengthwhich is 27.7 km.
