Campaign "Belarus Against Tobacco"
Every year on May 31, the WHO and its partners worldwide celebrate World No Tobacco Day. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus traditionally supports the WHO initiative and, from May 31 to June 21, 2019, is holding the republican anti-tobacco information and education campaign "Belarus Against Tobacco," also timed to coincide with the II European Games as a tobacco-free competition.
The republican anti-tobacco information and education campaign "Belarus Against Tobacco" is held under the slogan "Tobacco and Lung Health."
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco consumption is one of the most significant threats to human health, claiming about seven million lives annually. If urgent measures are not taken, the number of annual deaths may exceed eight million by 2030.
Tobacco consumption is one of the main risk factors for the development of a range of chronic diseases, including cancer, lung diseases, and cardiovascular diseases. According to the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), today 30% of all cancer deaths are related to smoking. However, tobacco use is one of the main preventable causes of non-communicable diseases.
The goal of the campaign is to raise public awareness of the dangerous effects of tobacco on human lungs, as well as to prevent tobacco consumption as an important measure to reduce smoking-related diseases.
Everyone deserves to breathe air free from tobacco smoke. If you care about your loved ones, quit smoking as soon as possible!
