After a prolonged period of severe frosts, when the thermometer dropped to -20°C, a thaw set in the district. Even short-term warming leads to the destruction of the ice structure: it becomes porous and brittle. Even if the surface appears solid visually, going onto the ice can still be life-threatening. Familiar routes that people previously used become unpredictable. Heavy snow cover creates additional load, provoking the formation of cracks. The greatest danger is posed by areas hidden under snow. The surface looks intact externally, but there may be a washout under a thin crust.

Since the beginning of the year, rescuers have already conducted 41 preventive raids, including in cooperation with interested prevention entities. During these events, 97 water bodies were inspected. Special attention is paid to explanatory work with the population: 215 people have been instructed. Specialists explain to ice fishing enthusiasts and local residents how to identify a dangerous area and what equipment should be carried. Particular attention is paid to the availability of life jackets. Many still ignore this safety device, although it is the vest that provides a chance of survival in icy water when strength disappears instantly.

– The majority of citizens are responsible for their own safety and use life jackets. For those who neglect them for now, we explain that the absence of basic self-rescue equipment can cost a life, – noted Andrey Romanovsky, First Deputy Head of the Department.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations urges citizens to exercise caution and reminds them: in case of an emergency, report it immediately by calling 101 or 112.
