For positive impressions: schoolchildren in Vitebsk were told about safety during the holidays
How to spend summer holidays with benefit and positive impressions, without forgetting about personal safety, was told to schoolchildren at the Vitebsk region media center by representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Belarusian Voluntary Society for the Rescue of Persons on Water (OSVOD), and the police, a BELTA correspondent reports.
One of the factors contributing to the deaths of children during the holidays remains improper behavior on water bodies. The head of the Vitebsk Regional Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Sergey Meshleshkin, told the children that pranks on the water lead to sad consequences. In 2023, out of 74 people who drowned in the region's waters, nine were minors. This includes careless games where schoolchildren compete to see who can dive deeper without knowing the depth of the water, being in the water while intoxicated, and riding inflatable mattresses without life jackets. In each of these cases, a tragic outcome could have been avoided if children and adults had followed basic safety rules. Sergey Meshleshkin reminded the schoolchildren present in the audience, including those online, that they should not swim in places not designated for swimming, such as so-called "wild beaches," and that minors should only be near water in the presence of adults.
Young Vitebsk residents were told how to recognize that a person is drowning and how to act if they see someone in trouble. The main recommendation is to immediately call for adult help or contact rescuers. Attempts to independently pull a drowning person out of the water, who may not be in control of themselves and could pull the rescuer down with them, can lead to a double tragedy, so teenagers need to assess their own capabilities. If possible, it is better to use improvised means such as sticks, ropes, or inflatable rings. This is why OSVOD employees advise going to the beach only with adults who can help in an unforeseen situation.
Regarding child safety at home, representatives of all departments were united on one point: playing with matches and flammable items is forbidden indoors. Children who spend a lot of time on social media should remember that the internet contains many traps designed to involve schoolchildren in illegal activities. These include, for example, dangerous part-time jobs on online drug markets, incitement to damage public property, and coercion into creating child pornography. If boys and girls become victims of virtual criminals, they can contact the police and report how they were targeted for mercenary purposes. Thus, minors are exempted from criminal liability if they voluntarily report drugs and attempts to involve them as couriers, stash keepers, or "sportiki" (a slang term for individuals involved in drug distribution).
School students were told about the importance of preventing damage to property on railway transport and the potential consequences of throwing foreign objects onto the tracks. Additionally, when crossing railway tracks, one should first ensure that no train is approaching and remove headphones to hear the warning signal of an approaching locomotive in time.
"Adhering to simple safety rules will ensure holidays that leave only positive memories. Always try to think about the consequences of your actions, listen to the advice of adults, and then your summer vacation will bring you a lot of positive emotions. The life of every person is precious to us, especially that of a child. You too will one day become parents, so be an example to everyone now and remember that you are as responsible for your own life as your parents are," concluded Sergey Meleshkin.
