The head of state noted that only in Belarus Independence Day is as important as Great Victory Day.

“Because then, at the biggest moment of the victorious offensive of the Red Army, the day of the liberation of Minsk became a harbinger of the victorious 9 May, a symbol of the revival of the Belarusian land and the entire Soviet nation. The choice of the date for our main state holiday is historically justified and accepted in the heart of each of us, every Belarusian. This choice epitomizes the will of contemporary Belarusians, who could not do otherwise, and also of our fathers and grandfathers,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Addressing the veterans, the president noted that they endured an unthinkable ordeal and survived in an epochal battle - the battle for the lives of their children and grandchildren.

“For our lives and those who will come after us. We bow low to you! Your generation has accomplished a feat unequaled in history. Today, together with you, we bow our heads again in memory of the heroes of the war. Eternal glory, immeasurable gratitude through the centuries to all those who have accomplished military and labor feats. A feat that has become our moral guideline,” the head of state said.
