Belarus eager to export some 300,000t of potatoes in 2016

Belarus intends to export about 300,000 tonnes of potatoes in 2016. The plans were released by Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister Vladimir Grakun after the solemn opening ceremony of the international wholesale food trade expo Prodexpo 2016 on 8 November, BelTA has learned.

According to the official, Belarus has spare potatoes to export. In 2015 Belarusian farmers exported about 300,000 tonnes. So far this year Belarus has exported 240,000-260,000 tonnes of potatoes. This year's final figure will be on par with last year's, assured Vladimir Grakun.

In his words, Belarusian potatoes are traditionally sold to Russia. "We are also working to sell potatoes to Uzbekistan, Georgia, and Tajikistan. But we will be able to talk about that with confidence only after concrete contracts are signed," said the official.

Apart from that, the Belarusian Deputy Agriculture and Food Minister noted that all the necessary conditions had been enabled to store potatoes for the sake of selling them domestically in between seasons. The warehouse facilities are capable of storing 800,000 tonnes of potatoes.
