Lukashenko signs decree to grant Belarusian citizenship to 319 people

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko signed decree No.171 on 12 May to grant citizenship of the Republic of Belarus to a number of people, BelTA has learned.

As many as 319 people have been granted Belarus' citizenship, including 290 citizens of Ukraine. Those are mostly people, who came to Belarus from Ukraine's Donetsk Oblast and Lugansk Oblast.

The head of state had previously granted Belarus' citizenship to 1,784 Ukrainians since August 2021, including 390 kids. Citizenship and migration offices of the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry fast-tracked Belarusian citizenship to 1,750 citizens of Ukraine in the same period.

A total of 3,534 Ukrainians have been granted Belarusian citizenship after the Big Conversation with the President on 9 August 2021, during which Aleksandr Lukashenko met with representatives of the general public, mass media, and the expert community. The head of state gave the relevant instructions on the matter back then.

Apart from that, in this period Belarusian citizenship was granted to 709 foreigners, who had come to Belarus from other countries. For instance, two medics from Syria and Somalia, who work in healthcare institutions in Minsk, became Belarusian citizens.
