In late June 1944, the 6th Guards Army, under the command of Colonel-General Ivan Chistyakov, was to close the ring of the Vitebsk cauldron, for which it was necessary to force the Western Dvina. In bloody battles, the army suffered heavy losses, but thanks to the courage and resilience of its fighters, the task was completed.
