Careless handling of fire is one of the causes of fires and loss of life.

On August 26, two fires occurred in the Beshenkovichi district: in the agro-town of Ostrovno and the village of Zaruchyevye of the Bocheikovsky rural council. A person died in each of the fires, and in both cases, the suspected cause of the fire was careless handling of fire while smoking in a state of alcoholic intoxication.

The main conditions contributing to fires in residential buildings and deaths from them are smoking and drunkenness. According to statistics, about 70% of those who died in fires abused alcohol and often smoked in bed. A smoldering cigarette butt falling on bedding causes a fire within 15 minutes. In this case, a person receives a lethal dose of carbon monoxide within 3 minutes. Moreover, most of these fires occur at night. Neighbors detect the fire when the house is almost completely engulfed in flames. The report to the duty service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations arrives very late, and the person inside the house dies. Very often, drunk smokers endanger not only their own lives but also the lives of others – relatives and neighbors.
