On the Collection of Alimony for Parental Support
The state takes measures for the social protection of elderly citizens, including those who are single or live alone. However, it is important to remember that children are also obliged to care for their parents and provide them with assistance, as stipulated in Article 10 of the Code of the Republic of Belarus on Marriage and Family.
The support of disabled parents in need of assistance is the responsibility of their adult able-bodied children. For example, if able-bodied children of elderly parents abuse alcohol, live off casual earnings, and rely on their parents – these facts indicate that elderly parents are in need of assistance, including from their children.
Based on the foregoing and for the purpose of protecting the rights and legitimate interests of elderly citizens, the prosecutor of the district has the right to file lawsuits in court to initiate civil cases for the collection of alimony from able-bodied children for the support of their parents.
