Injury prevention
December 15 is observed in the Republic of Belarus as Injury Prevention Day.
Winter is a time of increased injuries. The most common causes of injuries during the winter period are icy conditions, early darkness, and slippery footwear. Among those who suffer from ice-related injuries are children, middle-aged individuals, and the elderly. Falls on icy surfaces are the most frequent cause of winter injuries. Falls on smooth steps can be particularly dangerous. Orthopedic surgeons advise pedestrians to be more attentive during adverse weather conditions. Cross dangerous road sections cautiously, do not rush on stairs, and hold onto handrails. It is very important to wear comfortable winter footwear with a ribbed sole when going outside.
A significant portion of injuries is related to public transport. One can slip and fall both when entering and exiting a bus or trolleybus. Therefore, caution should be exercised at public transport stops.
Elderly individuals are particularly susceptible to injuries and fractures due to age-related characteristics of their skeletal system (increased bone fragility, reduced elasticity of ligaments and muscles). Therefore, elderly people should avoid going out in slippery weather and postpone trips and visits to the store.
For children, sledding, ice sliding, and tubing pose a particular danger. In order for our winter recreationchildren, it is necessary to observe safety precautions.
1. For tubing, it is necessary to choose specially equipped slopes, which are chutes where the probability of "flying off" the track is minimal, with a slope of no more than 20 degrees without trees, pits, bumps, protruding bushes, or stones in the path. At the bottom of the slope, there should be enough space for braking, and there should be no bodies of water or highways.
If you have chosen to descend on an unprepared slope, look around: are there any pits, bumps, protruding bushes, stones, or anything else that could pose a danger to life and health.
2. Unlike sleds, tubing can reach speeds of up to 50 km/h, spins around its axis, and has no braking device. It is like a car with failed brakes, so pay attention to other riders on the slope. Before starting the descent, make sure that there is no one else skiing in front of you, especially children.
3. It is necessary to observe the order and distance when descending: at least 50 meters or 20 seconds between the descent of the previous tube and yours.
4. Tubing should be done while sitting. It is forbidden to ride a tube standing up, lying down, jumping like on a trampoline, from jumps, or riding with your back to the slope.
5. Tubing is not allowed on slopes with jumps: upon landing, the tube bounces significantly, which can lead to severe injuries to the back and cervical spine.
6. It is forbidden to tie tubes tocar, snowmobile, or any other vehicle.
7. It is also forbidden to attach inner tubes to each other in a "train" formation, as they may overturn.
8. It is dangerous to ride an inner tube with two people, especially with a child, as one can fall out: it is impossible to control the situation when one hand has to hold the child and the other the inner tube.
9. Do not overload the inner tube. The maximum permissible weight for each model is indicated in its specifications. Use inner tubes that are appropriate in size.
A healthy child is every parent's dream.
