COAT OF ARMS DESCRIPTION OF THE URBAN SETTLEMENT OF BESCHENKOVICHI

In a silver field of a Spanish shield, there are five blue wavy stripes on which there is a red boat with a golden cargo. On the red sail is the coat of arms "Fox".

The main element of the coat of arms is a red boat loaded with golden goods, with a red sail unfurled. The shape of the boat is taken from the family coat of arms of the Counts Khreptovich-Butenev (Great Soviet Encyclopedia, 1971, Vol. 3, p. 433), who owned Beshenkovichi from 1783 to the early 20th century. Beshenkovichi is located on the Western Dvina River, which was part of the trade route "from the Varangians to the Greeks". In the 17th century, one of the largest piers on the Western Dvina River was built in Beshenkovichi. From where goods were shipped along the trade waterway to Riga. The cargo on the boat symbolizes that goods were not only shipped from this pier but also delivered by river to Beshenkovichi, as the famous four-week Beshenkovichi fair, the first after Zelva, was held here annually. Merchants from the Dvina region, Dnieper region, other cities and towns, both from Belarus and Russia, and other foreign countries gathered here.

The Western Dvina River on the coat of arms is depicted by five blue wavy stripes. This waterway has been the basis for the economic development of the city for four centuries. In addition, according to toponymy researchers, Beshenkovichi got its name from the word "beshen" - a strong current in the middle of the river. The number of wavy blue stripes, five, symbolizes five full centuries since the founding of the city, which turned 575 years old this year.

The coat of arms "Lis" depicted on a red sail is one of the main elements of the family coat of arms of Lev Ivanovich Sapieha, Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, with whose name the history of the urban-type settlement of Beshenkovichi and the district is associated. Lev Sapieha was born in the current territory of Beshenkovichi district in the family estate of Ostrovno. From 1630 he owned Beshenkovichi. According to his will in 1632, Beshenkovichi passed to his younger son Casimir Lev Sapieha. Under him, Beshenkovichi developed rapidly, received the status of a town, in 1834 - Magdeburg rights and permission for 2 fairs a year and 1 market day a week. A large pier was built.
