Recommendations of the State Industrial Supervision Authority on the safe operation of domestic boilers running on solid fuel
The main cause of domestic boiler ruptures is the freezing of heating systems (expansion tanks), which leads to the cessation of water circulation and a sharp increase in the pressure of the heat transfer fluid in the boiler. Freezing of heating systems typically occurs in attic spaces with uninsulated or inadequately insulated expansion tanks, in cases where boilers are operated intermittently on solid fuels, or in the presence of drafts affecting the heating system. If there is no water circulation in the heating system while fuel is burning within the boiler's heating surfaces, the water will boil, accompanied by a pressure increase. Upon reaching critical pressure, the boiler's heating surfaces rupture. The ejection of a large volume of steam and steam-water mixture from the damaged boiler causes an increase in pressure inside the room, consequently leading to the destruction of the building's load-bearing structures.
TO PREVENT DOMESTIC BOILER RUPTURES, IT IS NECESSARY TO:
• ensure that the shut-off valves on the supply and return pipelines are open and that the heating system is vented;
• remove condensate from the lower pocket of the chimney;
• Inspect the chimney heads and flue channels, ensuring they are free of ice and blockages;
• Before igniting the boiler, open the heating system make-up line and the expansion tank filling control line. Water flowing from the control line indicates that the heating system has not frozen. At the same time, ensure that the pressure on the pressure gauge installed on the boiler does not increase.
• If no water flows from the expansion tank filling control line, and the water pressure in the boiler increases and reaches the pressure of the water supply network, this indicates that the heating system has frozen. In this case, it is strictly forbidden to ignite the boiler. It is necessary to identify the location of the heating system freeze-up, thaw it, and only then, when water flows from the control line (with the make-up line open), can the boiler be gradually ignited, constantly monitoring the water pressure in the boiler using the installed pressure gauge.
• If the water pressure in the boiler begins to approach the maximum permissible level, it is necessary to immediately stop fuel supply to the boiler, remove it to a safe location, and extinguish the remaining burning fuel with water. In this case, the heating system has not been thawed.
•
The installation of domestic water heaters and heating systems should only be carried out by specialized organizations. In this case Years
