Burbot fishing ban in effect from December 25

From December 25, a ban on burbot fishing is in effect in the fishing grounds of Belarus, which will last until February 28, 2021. During this period, burbot go to spawn. The Belarusian name for burbot is myantuz, myanyok. It is the only freshwater representative of the cod family.
Burbot spawn in small schools consisting of a female and several males. Spawning occurs at a water temperature of about 1-3 degrees Celsius. During severe frosts, spawning is more active; during thaws, it stretches for a month or more. The fertility of burbot is very high; in large individuals, it reaches a million eggs or more. However, despite this, the survival rate of eggs and larvae is low. A large number of eggs are eaten by other fish, and some by the burbot itself.
For catching burbot during the ban period, administrative liability is provided in the form of a fine of up to 50 basic units or criminal liability if more than three individuals of this species are caught. In addition, for each burbot caught during the spawning period, 27 basic units will have to be paid as compensation for the damage caused to nature.
