GENERAL INFORMATION

On June 26, 1922, at the third session of the Central Executive Committee of the Belarusian SSR, the Regulation on Prosecutorial Supervision was adopted and the State Prosecutor's Office was established as part of the People's Commissariat of Justice, with the aim of supervising compliance with laws and in the interests of the "proper organization" of the fight against crime.

The Constitution of the Republic of Belarus clearly defines the competence of the prosecutor's bodies and enshrines the principle of independence of prosecutors in the exercise of their powers. The unified and centralized system of prosecutor's bodies is headed by the Prosecutor General, who is accountable to the Head of State.

By Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus No. 157 of March 26, 1998, a professional holiday, the Day of Prosecutor's Office Employees, was established in independent Belarus.

In accordance with Article 4 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus "On the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Belarus" dated May 8, 2007 No. 220-Z, the prosecutor's office supervises:

- the precise and uniform execution of laws, decrees, orders, and other normative legal acts by republican bodies of state administration and other state organizations subordinate to the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus, local representative, executive, and administrative bodies, public associations, religious organizations, and other organizations, officials, and other citizens, including individual entrepreneurs;

- the execution of legislation in the course of operational-search activities;

- the execution of law during pre-trial proceedings, during preliminary investigation and inquiry;

- the compliance of court decisions with the law, as well as compliance with legislation during their execution;

- compliance with legislation during the execution of punishment and other measures of criminal liability, as well as coercive measures.

The prosecutor's office coordinates the law enforcement activities of state bodies engaged in combating crime and corruption, as well as the crime prevention activities of other organizations involved in combating crime.

Prosecutors participate in the consideration of civil cases by courts, as well as cases related to the conduct of entrepreneurial and other economic activities, support state prosecution in criminal cases, and participate in administrative proceedings.
