The first signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to flu symptoms: headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, suffocation, and confusion. If poisoning is suspected, it is necessary to immediately turn off the gas appliance, ventilate the room, go outside, call an ambulance, and the gas service.

To avoid accidents related to carbon monoxide poisoning, UP "Vitebskoblgaz" recommends strictly observing the requirements of the Rules for the Use of Gas in Everyday Life, timely checking the condition of smoke and ventilation ducts, and performing maintenance on heating and water heating gas-using equipment.

Initial inspection, carried out before gas supply, as well as repeated (periodic) inspection of the condition of smoke and ventilation ducts in residential and (or) non-residential premises are performed by specialized organizations upon request:

— organizations carrying out the operation of housing stock, authorized persons for the management of common property, homeowners' associations, developer organizations — for apartment buildings;

— gas consumers or gas users who are family members and/or cohabitants of the gas consumer, for single-family and semi-detached houses.

After each repair, chimney and ventilation ducts must be inspected and cleaned, regardless of the time elapsed since the previous inspection.

Inspection of the condition (draft presence) and cleaning of chimney and ventilation ducts are carried out:

— for gas heating equipment – at least once a year;

— for instantaneous gas water heaters, depending on the material they are made of:

brick – at least once a quarter;
asbestos-cement, ceramic, steel, as well as those made of special refractory concrete blocks – at least once a year.
It is permitted to carry out repeated (periodic) inspections of the technical condition of chimney and ventilation ducts in single-family and semi-detached houses with gas equipment with sealed combustion chambers and individual coaxial flue gas outlets installed in the said houses by gas consumers or gas users, provided that there is a certificate of training for the right to perform repeated inspection and cleaning of chimney and ventilation ducts, with the inspection recorded in the logbook of repeated inspection and cleaning results of chimney and ventilation ducts.

The results of the periodic inspection of the technical condition of chimney and ventilation ducts in residential and (or) non-residential premises are recorded in the act of inspection of the technical condition of chimney and ventilation ducts in accordance with TKP 629-2018.

In case the specified act contains a conclusion on the unsuitability of smoke and ventilation ducts for operation, the specialized organization shall immediately inform the state energy and gas supervision authority, the authorized person for managing common property, or the owners' association, or the organization carrying out the operation of the housing stock, and the gas supply organization for the immediate disconnection of gas-using equipment from the gas supply system.

Carbon monoxide detectors will help detect carbon monoxide.
