Remains of 147 Soldiers Who Died During the Great Patriotic War Reburied in Vitebsk District
At the military burial site No. 4391, located in the agro-town of Vorony, the remains of 147 Red Army soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War were reburied. The grim discovery was made as a result of field search operations in the vicinity of the settlements of Yeremino, Ranino, Luchinovka of the Voronovsky village council of Vitebsk district. Field search operations were carried out by servicemen of the 52nd Separate Specialized Search Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, together with Belarusian and Russian volunteer searchers from Novopolotsk, Vitebsk, and the Moscow, Chelyabinsk, and Smolensk regions of the Russian Federation. They were also assisted by college students and schoolchildren from Vitebsk and Vitebsk district. During the International Watch of Memory, the remains of soldiers from the 134th and 262nd Rifle Divisions, as well as hospital burials of the 215th Rifle Division and the 17th Guards Rifle Division, who died in 1943-1944, were found.
– The current reburial is a kind of culmination of the immense work of our search teams. During the Great Patriotic War, representatives of many nationalities of the Soviet Union liberated the country shoulder to shoulder in the ranks of the Red Army. Only their unity and solidarity made it possible to break the back of fascism, – emphasized the Chairman of the Regional Council of Deputies Dmitry Demidov. – It is our civic, human duty to do everything to immortalize the names of those who gave their lives for freedom. Such events serve as a lesson in patriotism, a lesson in courage for the youth. Currently, revanchist sentiments are strong in Western European countries. In the Baltic states and Poland, monuments to the liberator soldiers are being demolished with ferocity. Neo-Nazis, like the fascists who came to enslave our lands in the 1940s, are doing everything to cut the roots of history, to deprive people of their memory. Today, public activists and servicemen who are engaged in the search, identification, and immortalization of names are on the front lines; they are not only defending the memory and bright name of the fallen soldiers but also protecting future generations. It is the sacred duty of contemporaries to do everything to preserve the memory of the liberators for centuries.
The rally participants honored the memory of the fallen with a minute of silence. During the burial of the remains of the Fatherland's defenders, gun salutes were fired, and wreaths and flowers were laid on the mass grave.
As noted in the Vitebsk District Executive Committee, this year alone, the remains of 206 Red Army servicemen were found in the district, and in the vicinity of the village of Bolshaya Lyubshchina – fragmented remains of 24 civilians, including 2 children.
