During the investigation of the criminal case on the genocide of the population of Belarus during the Great Patriotic War and the post-war period, the prosecutor's office discovered 3 previously unaccounted for burial sites of war victims in Beshenkovichi District. These burial sites are located near the villages of Chanovichi, Ozerki, and Sokorovo.
For example, at the civilian cemetery near the village of Ozerki, about 10 people are buried, presumably killed by Nazi invaders during forced labor transportation. A "sorting camp" was located in the village itself during the war.
Near the village of Chanovichi, a site of execution and burial of about 8 civilians was identified. All residents were shot by "German soldiers" on the tip of "policemen" for alleged connections with partisans.
During the investigation of the criminal case, the district prosecutor's office also received information about two sites of execution and burial of civilians, one of which is located near the agro-town of Bocheikovo (about 90 people), and the other - in the urban settlement of Beshenkovichi near the "Old Marienfeld" estate (more than 40 people). Unfortunately, it is not possible to identify witnesses and eyewitnesses to specify the location of the burial sites on the ground.
During the investigation, the circumstances of the burning of the village of Khotino by Nazi punitive detachments and their accomplices were established. The local residents of this village who failed to hide were convoyed by the punitive detachments to the village of Sokorovo, with men being tied to horses and dragged along the ground. Subsequently, the detainees were shot.
The extermination of civilians near the villages of Sloboda, Ulla, and Ostrovno, as well as in the urban settlement of Beshenkovichi, was accompanied by particular atrocities, where about 6,000 people from among local residents and nearby villages became victims. In all cases of mass extermination of civilians, the punitive detachments prepared pits in advance, into which they first threw children, and then shot adults, whose bodies were thrown on top. The pits were buried, but according to witnesses who learned about these facts from eyewitnesses, some of the victims did not die immediately, so the "earth moved" at the site of extermination for several more days.
In total, taking into account information obtained from archival sources, about 8,500 civilians were killed on the territory of the district during its occupation by Nazi invaders. In addition, it was established that there were prisoner-of-war camps in Ulla and Beshenkovichi, where about 1,700 people were tortured to death and shot by punitive detachments. More than 1,200 residents of our district were driven to forced labor in Germany.
