"Military Service - Duty and Obligation"

The Republic of Belarus is an independent sovereign state where the greatest values – peace and stability – are ensured. Thanks to this, we can study, work, make and realize life plans, create families, and raise children. But in order to preserve and protect these values, a reliable guarantor of security has been created in our country – effective, highly trained Armed Forces equipped with modern weapons and military equipment, which are recognized as among the most combat-ready in the Eastern European and Asian region.

Article 57 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus states: "The defense of the Republic of Belarus is a duty and sacred obligation of a citizen of the Republic of Belarus."

These words contain the essence of ensuring the military security of the Republic of Belarus in modern conditions.

According to Article 1 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus dated 05.11.1992 No. 1914-XII "On Military Duty and Military Service", military duty is defined as the obligation of citizens of the Republic of Belarus, established for the purpose of creating and continuously functioning a system of measures ensuring the defense of the Republic of Belarus, as well as the passage of military service by citizens and their preparation for the armed defense of the Republic of Belarus.

Military service refers to the main type of military service and consists in the direct fulfillment of military duty by citizens as part of the Armed Forces and other military formations.

In accordance with the main provisions of the legislation of the Republic of Belarus, any obligation implies responsibility for its non-fulfillment. The military duty of citizens of the Republic of Belarus was no exception.

In particular, Article 435 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus provides for liability for evading conscription measures for military service.

Crimes of this category are mainly expressed in the fact that conscripts of the commissariat, having received a summons to appear for a medical examination and subsequent conscription for military service as part of the Armed Forces, did not appear at the military enlistment office at the appointed time.
