Driving Under the Influence

There is no excuse for those who drive a vehicle while intoxicated. A large number of citizens are injured and killed as a result of accidents caused by drunk drivers.

Criminal liability is provided for violations of traffic rules by persons who are intoxicated and driving vehicles.

Thus, in January 2019, a 44-year-old resident of Polotsk district, K., was brought to criminal responsibility. While intoxicated, he was driving a VAZ-2101 car and, violating traffic rules at the intersection of M3 "Minsk-Vitebsk" and P113 "Senno-Beshenkovichi-Ushachi" highways, collided with a Gazelle car, as a result of which one of the passengers of the VAZ-2101 car sustained severe bodily injuries.

During the court hearing, it was established that K., working in one of the agricultural organizations of Polotsk district, during his lunch break with two other employees of this organization, consumed alcoholic beverages, after which they decided to visit K.'s relatives in Tolochin district.

K., who had never had a driver's license, got behind the wheel, and his two friends sat in the passenger seats, continuing to drink alcohol in the car. Moving along a secondary road from the urban settlement of Beshenkovichi in the direction of Senno, K. drove onto the main road without slowing down or stopping, where he collided with a Gazelle car. One of the passengers, R., was taken unconscious to the intensive care unit of the hospital. Subsequently, it was established that R. had sustained severe bodily injuries, classified as life-threatening.

Citizen K. was brought to criminal responsibility and sentenced to 3 years and 6 months of imprisonment with deprivation of the right to engage in activities related to driving vehicles for a period of 5 years. The verdict has entered into force.
