Sergeyenko promises calm atmosphere during referendum in Belarus

We will ensure the stability in the country and will hold the referendum in a calm atmosphere, in a routine mode, Head of the Belarus President Administration Igor Sergeyenko told the media following the Security Council session chaired by the head of state, BelTA has learned. 

Igor Sergeyenko stressed that constructive measured work is underway ahead of the national referendum on constitutional amendments. There are some shortcomings which were addressed at the meeting of the Security Council. There is a need to get rid of formalism, to engage in dialogue and to find formats of interaction in order to engage the relevant groups of the population. Now MPs, heads of government bodies, local authorities, political scientists and experts are actively involved in this work. "The main task is to convey to our people the main essence of the forward-looking constitutional amendments developed taking into account the opinions of people," said Igor Sergeyenko. "We need to persuade people to come to the polling stations and cast their votes in support of the constitutional additions and amendments." 

One of the important issues on the agenda of the Security Council meeting was ways to ensure safety and security during the preparation and conduct of the referendum, especially with regard to members of the election commissions at all levels. 

"I am sure that the stability that we have in our country today will remain in place in the coming days and weeks and we will hold a referendum in a calm atmosphere and in a routine mode. “Today we feel the feedback, the interest of the majority, the overwhelming part of the population in the referendum, in its results, and in personal participation [in this event]. To cast your vote means to give it for the future of the country, children and all fellow countrymen," he said.
